Nothing fades into history quicker than a pop sensation, and the Spice Girls already seem like a distant memory. The biggest phenomenon in popular music since the Beatles only happened a few years ago, but the times when the girls had to be on stage at Wembley Arena by six o'clock to fit in with their audience's bedtime schedule belong to another age. Pop years are so much like dog years, in fact, that, in the wake of Victoria Beckham's dinner party for the five of them, there's already talk of a grand Spice Girls reunion. "It was like living in a dream," says the artist formerly known as Sporty Spice. "Up to a point, everything we touched turned to gold and we couldn't do anything wrong. There's no way that we made it happen; at the end of the day, no one could have guessed that it would get so big. It's hard to come to terms with that part of my life now, but without it, I couldn't be doing what I'm doing today."
Melanie Chisholm, Mel C, the Spice Girl who could really sing, has matured into a proper solo artist, give or take the odd misguided festival appearance. "Going on stage at V99 was one of the worst experiences of my life," says Chisholm, who announced her solo career by sharing a bill with the Manic Street Preachers and Supergrass in front of a mob of drunken students, and was promptly showered with bottles. "I don't think any of them were filled with piss, at least. I remember someone throwing a box of Weetabix. Every song felt like it was an hour long."
Being part of the disposable generation, Chisholm keeps a collection of CDs with her at all times, but they generally get lost sooner or later, and, as she listens to music in the gym or in the car, she chucks the CD cases away. She owns no vinyl. "My mum, who's a singer, had records by the Beatles, Motown and some heavy-rock stuff like Led Zeppelin, so she was quite cool until the 80s arrived and Dire Straits came along," she says. "But what she really loved was black soul music. Through my mum, I got into Motown, especially Stevie Wonder." Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life is her favourite album. "I am a fan of some rap music and I can appreciate the expression from the street and all that, but I think Stevie did it with class," she enthuses. "Beautiful songs, beautiful lyrics and a wonderful voice. Whenever I don't know what to listen to, I remember that Songs in the Key of Life is the one for me."
Being from Liverpool, Chisholm would be in trouble if she didn't like the Beatles. Her flat in the city is over the Albert Dock, which houses the Beatles museum. "Revolver is my favourite Beatles album," she says. "The whole city is still very, very proud of them, and growing up, you would hear the Beatles in pubs and shops the whole time. I like Revolver because it's an album of pop songs, but they were experimenting with the old Indian vibe as well. Unfortunately, I grew up a bit and got into the whole pop thing after the Beatles, which for me was Wham."
At Chisholm's school, you were allowed to like Wham or Duran Duran, but not both. Wars were waged over whether Fantastic or Planet Earth was the better album, and she had the misfortune to live next door to a Duranie girl. "Duran Duran just put too much make-up on; at least George Michael was subtle about it," she says. "Then Madonna came along. I didn't like Like a Virgin at first because I was embarrassed by it, but then everyone at school listened to it so I had to like it."
Dusty Springfield, Annie Lennox and Kate Bush are Chisholm's favourite female singers, and she also likes the American singer Fiona Apple. "I was listening to her a couple of years ago when I was going through depression and it sounded right," she says. "It just sucked me in, really - she plays piano, she's got a very deep voice, and it's quite tortured and great for when you're feeling a bit down. The same as PJ Harvey, who I love for sounding so tough and so vulnerable at the same time."
After a quick blast of PJ Harvey's Kamikaze on the stereo, Chisholm moves on to some of the nu metal she listens to at the gym, including System of a Down and Linkin Park. "There's a part of me that likes this manic energy boost, and nu metal is that. The other thing is that these bands are really quite comical: it's all about jumping up and down in a really emotive, let's-get-a-nosebleed way. You can't take it too seriously. I mean, my mum likes Papa Roach. Next time I go to Reading, I'll take her down to the moshpit."
It's all a long way from the Spice Girls, and while Chisholm's new album, Reason, isn't quite as ferocious as System of a Down, it does show traces of the rock music she's been listening to. She certainly seems happy to be doing her own thing. "I had a great time being in a band, but I was just tired of the bullying and the ego battles you inevitably get," she concludes of her Spice Girls days. "Sometimes we would work 20-hour days. We were with each other 24 hours a day, and it was absolutely crazy for three years. I think I've come out of it quite well, all things considered."
According to a recent interview, Melanie C was asked how successful she was in the US.
Melanie replied back to the Radio DJ by telling him that her last album, 'Northern Star', out sold Robbie Williams last album.
Listen to to Melanie's new Radio 2 Interview about the Spice dinner.
Thank you to SoloSpiceNews.com for hosting the interview.
If you haven't done so yet, head over to MelanieC.net and listen to Melanie's new album.
Melanie C has reached the top of the Amazon pre-release chart. Her single is the hottest pre-order at the moment. She also at number 3 on the Pre-release play chart. Xtina is at number 1 followed by DJ Sammy at number 2.
Reports have been pouring in about last nights Spice Girls reunion as the quintet reformed for the first time since 98 at the Beckhams mansion.
As Victoria Beckham stated on her website, the dinner was about them getting together but not bussiness. Melanie C's spokesperson was quoted on having said Melanie C would not return to the group as she is getting ready to promote her new album and the promotion will consume most of the next year.
An "insider" to the tabloids added a lot of fuel to the flame which alarmed and made Spice Girls fans a bit angry. It seems that an "insider" said Melanie C told the girls that reforming, no matter how nice the idea, would burden her "healthy" solo career and perhaps not allow her to become the "Robbie Williams" of the Spice Girls.
This "insider" is a complete lot of bullocks and you shouldn't believe what the tabs have to report, as official word was that the girls were to meet in order to reignite old friendship and Ms. Beckham had no plans to make the dinner business, and that from her official website.
It's a shame that the tabs would use such a great story to try to create drama where there is none. If the girls decided to join up for dinner, it was because they still have room in their hearts for each other, and it was not a cat fight. It's even sadder that fans would begin to point and slander one of their idols, no matter how many times we've seen how the tabloids manipulate stories or create stories without truth within them. So before you point a finger, or get disappointed by any "insider" stories, remember they are in the business to sell, and creating drama where there is none makes for a better read.
Check out some great new pics of Melanie C over at the EMI Finland page.
Reports have been sworming in all around Europe about a possible Spice Girls reunion. As always, our darling Melanie has managed to confuse everyone with her "out of context" quotes from the media.
Melanie C joined Spice Girls Victoria Beckham, Melanie B, Emma B, and ex-Spice Geri Haliwell today at Victoria's house for a reunion dinner! The news has been posted on Victoria's official website.
Official reports from Melanie's PR have not been made, BUT Victoria's website has been updated with the report that the dinner is true and that the reunion is not meant to be for planning any Spice reunion but rather to buildup the bonds that have been weakened.
I'm glad to hear that the Spice Girls still care for each other. I'd like them all to be friends, and a reunion would be greatyl welcome by myself BUT I wouldn't want them to put on hold their solo careers. If anything a few live appearances as the 5 piece would be nice...but their solo work is so good that it'd be nice to see them continue their solo work aswell.
If you haven't done so yet, head over to MelanieC.net and listen to Melanie's new album.
Clips of the songs Reason, Positively Somewhere and Yeh Yeh Yeh are up right now, more clips are to come.
This album is so , as a friend put it, the "perfect complement" to Northern Star. It def. isn't the same type of album nor does it try to be Northern Star part 2, it's an entirely new album and it's just gorgeous. I'm glad Melanie didn't try to redo Northern Star...a good thing should be left untarnished. I think creating a new album which is it's own thing is the better way to have gone.
Congrats to Melanie C on a great new album.
Melanie C's going to be uploading clips from 'Reason' onto MelanieC.net starting next week.

SPICE UP YOUR MEL
Melanie C is the only one who has made it outside of the Spice Girls, and this, her second solo album, is a much more confident affair
3 February 2003
The cynics and music critics scoffed very loudly at the prospect of solo albums from every member of the Spice Girls back in 1995. The pop market just wouldn't welcome five spin-offs from the waning Spice brand, they claimed, and they instantly began speculating on which spice would come out on top. Now almost eight years it appears there is indeed only one Spice Girl that retains credibility in the music industry Š Mel C. But the former Sporty Spice hasnÕt always been the odds on favourite.
On the back of a credible Number 1 single collaboration with Missy Elliot shortly after their breakup, Mel B was thought most likely to emerge as the biggest star. She was closely followed however, by Victoria Beckham, formerly Posh Spice in the success ratings and Geri whoÕd already had a couple of hits already under her belt was carrying the underdog flag to boot.
Mel C on the other hand was instantly dismissed despite possessing easily the best voice out of the five. A disastrous appearance at 1999's V Festival singing the Sex Pistols' Anarchy In The UK certainly didn't help matters ("I am an antichrist, I am a Sporty Spice!" and the singer's image at the time - all nose studs and trendy combat pants - looked like an irony gone too far. With her debut album Northern Star the choice for a lead-off single, the Bowie influenced Going Down, was a brave but bewildering one and, with it's raucous synth noises and utter tuneless ness, certainly alienated the star from her natural fan base who'd arrived expecting pop fabulousness, not such an obvious grab for indie credibility.
But the public loves a fighter and, slowly but surely, everyone came to love Northern Star. Like a Now That's What I Call Music! mish-mash of contemporary pop trends, it boasted a host of strong tunes in rock, ballad, trance and R&B styles and, as the old millennium turned into a new one, Northern Star started to throw up some seriously big pop hits that kicked Geri's and Mel B's current efforts into touch and were never surpassed in either quality or sales, by later releases by Emma Bunton or Victoria Beckham. Both the soulful collaboration with (now departed) Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, Never Be The Same Again and the Ibiza-tastic I Turn To You were two of 2000's better Number 1 singles and, a year after its release, Northern Star had become the first (and, so far, the only) solo Spice album to exceed UK sales of 1 million plus.
Three years down the line and a small selection of the UK's music retailers are gathered at one of London's trendier members clubs for an airing of Ms. Chisholm's latest album, Reason. Most have already heard the forthcoming single, Here It Comes Again, and some have seen the Box/MTV-aired video, featuring a slimmed-down, raven-haired Mel in full Natalie Imbruglia/Madonna in 'Frozen' fashion style. Produced by Marius De Vries, and co-written by De Vries, Mel and Robert Howard, Here It Comes Again kicks off the Reason campaign and indeed the new album in fine style. A hugely positive piece of grown-up pop (the singer hits 30 in 2004), it's followed by four other strident stormers in a similar vein - Reason (Mel's favourite), Lose Myself In You and On The Horizon - any one of which could certainly follow Here It ComesÉ and be plucked from the album as a potential hit single.
At this point it becomes instantly clear that Reason is a much more confident and self-assured proposition than Northern Star. While many of the first album's collaborators are still there (mixer Pat McCarthy, writers Rhett Lawrence and Robert Howard), the new record has a much more cohesive and consistent sound that its predecessor. Without the cut 'n' paste grab bag of styles of Northern Star, the music here flows from one track to another, and while the pace alters considerably throughout, from ballad, to soft rock, to rock to club track, it's obvious that Mel and her production team no longer see the need to chuck loads of genres against the wall and hope that something sticks.
At its mid-point, Reason turns a corner, and the upbeat, soft rock of Positively Somewhere (look out Sheryl and Alanis), gives way to the gorgeous Melt, which in turn gives way to a clutch of luxuriously produced ballads. The best of these is the plaintive Soul Boy, and, with its reflective: "I don't wanna kiss no-one else," lyric, it could be the album's best example of how far Mel's vocal style has developed from powerful Scouse belter to expressive, understated white soul.
Finally, the album ends in upbeat mode with the defiant Garbage/Avril Lavigne sounding rocker Let's Love. Possibly, when the singer asks: "Did ya see me coming?" she's making a reference to the days a few years ago when everyone wrote off her solo career before it had even begun: possibly she means something else entirely, but when you can hear the album only once, in a crowded room, and with no prospect of EMI Virgin letting any advance copies slip out in case of piracy, we won't known until the promos are finally released a couple of weeks in advance of Reason's release on 10 March. Last up is a club track, Yeh, Yeh, Yeh, another contender for a single and one that reminded many people in the room of '90s rave-punk popsters, Republica, currently residing in the What Happened To? category.
After the playback, Mel appeared in person to gather the response from the retail pundits. She worked the room with cheerful grace, chatting frankly and charmingly, looking great in dark suede and tan trouser suit, topped off with (she tells us) Cristian Dior boots. She also announced she's planning a tour of UK theatres in the spring, says she hopes to be in town to attend the Brits on 20 February. Most revealingly, she admitted she's really thankful she isn't launching her career now, in these days of Pop Idols/Popstars/The Rivals and Fame Academy. Almost wistfully, and with disarming honesty, she says, "I don't think we'd have made it, if we had to win all these competitions."

Melanie C requests and begs any fans that have access to the Reason promo not to upload the album to the internet.
Virgin has told Melanie that they will their best to keep the album under wraps but if the album is uploaded to the internet they will pull the plug on the album for fear that they will lose money.
This does sound like a irrational reaction from the record company, but Virgin has suffered a lot of money lose throught the last 3 years, like Melanie C said, the people who were there for her when she released Northern Star are no longer working at Virgin. They lost loads of money when Forever was uploaded, and sales declined rapidly.
So please, listen to Virgin and Melanie's request. If you have the promo album, you can critic it, you can comment about it...but please do not use it illegally and post it online...it's a promo it's not meant to be posted online...it's meant so journalists and critics can hear the album and do their job.
Heather: Melanie, Welcome to the show. How are you this morning?
