Melanie C Interview with TOTP 1999
Will you have more of an influence on the new Spice Girls album?
Roger
Melanie: All of the Spice Girls have been very influential on all of our
work and will continue to be on all our future albums.
Which boy group do you think shows the most respect for women and girl
power?
Lauren
Melanie: I think I'd have to say Boyzone because three of them are
daddies!!!
What do you think of Geri's success after you saying she would be a flop?
Geri
Melanie: I never said Geri would be a flop. I knew she would be
successful, and I'm very happy she is.
Are you trying to appeal to a more adult market with your solo material?
Dominic
Melanie: I'm not aiming my music at any particular audience. Whoever wants
to listen is very welcome.
Hi Melanieanie! When will your official site be open? Will we be able to
pre-order your singles and album from there?
Rob
Melanie: My solo site is already up and running and is called
www.northern-star.co.uk - There are no plans to sell CDs directly but
that's a good idea for the future.
I heard a rumour that there will be a second Spice World movie that is in
the making for 2001. Is this true?
Ketan
Melanie: At the moment we have no plans for a second movie. We're
concentrating on our third album and touring.
I have heard that you no longer want to do the types of promotions that
you did in the earlier years of Spice. Does this mean that the collector
dolls, candy, Polaroids, toys, and home videos will all go?
Sindy
Melanie: There will still be Spice Girls merchandise available but we will
promote our records with live shows.
Does it annoy you when people 'knock' you for doing something different
(e.g. booing at Heaton Park - a brilliant set I thought by the way !! ),
when if you were there as the 'Spice Girls' you would no doubt be
headlining and being fawned over ??
Cheers, Wendy
Melanie: Firstly, thank you. I'm so glad you liked the set. Everybody's
entitled to an opinion so I don't mind as long as they give me a fair
chance.
Why do you have a gold tooth?
Johanna
Melanie: No real reason, I just fancied one!
How much can you bench press?
Hal
Melanie: I don't know but I'm a lot stronger than I used to be. I find
strength varies from day to day.
What type of music is your new album? How many songs are on it?
Hanna
Melanie: There are 12 songs on my new album, Northern Star. It's all pop
but the styles vary from rock, R&B, dance and some acoustic stuff.
What's the most important thing if you want success? Is it right attitude
or is it the love of the music?
John Pemberton
Melanie: Everybody's different but for me I think they're both important.
What is your favorite song from your Northern Star album?
Angie Hung
Melanie: It's really hard to say because I love them all, as I do the
Spice Girls' songs.
How affected are you by your success? Not in the sense that your
personality change but like would a not-too-successful solo career cause
an early retirement? Or would you not give up and keep working hard?
Jess
Melanie C: No matter how successful my solo career is or isn't I'll still
keep writing and recording because that's what I love to do.
Why did you get your hair cut?
Shana
Melanie: I'd wanted short hair for a long time and when it got damaged
during a colouring process it seemed like the ideal opportunity to lop it
off!!!
Was "Emit Remmus" written for you by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Florencia
Melanie: I don't know you'd have to ask Anthony Keidis - it would be nice
if it was though, wouldn't it?
Are you really going to move to LA and which part are you going to move to
if it's true?
Julie
Melanie: No. I like spending time in LA but England's my home. My
favourite part of LA is West Hollywood.
Is it true that there will be a Spice Girls box-set coming out soon?
Suemay
Melanie: There are no plans yet - Sorry.
Do you feel now you've changed your image for your solo career, you won't
fit into the Spice Girls' role?
Julia P.
Melanie: I'm still exactly the same person who wears the same clothes -
I've just had my hair cut!
What can we expect from the new Spice Girls album?
Jess
Melanie: More of the same but even better than the previous stuff.
Where did you get the inspirations for your songs on your album?
Renata
Melanie: I always write about personal experiences but sometimes I create
characters and live out my fantasies through my songs.
How many tattoos do you have? Is it true that the guy from the Red Hot
Chilli Peppers designed one for you?
Laura
Melanie: I have 6 tattoos. Anthony is a good friend of mine and he did
help me design the one on my lower back.
Did you write your own songs for the album?
Baz
Melanie: Yes, I co-wrote all the songs.
Do you prefer singing 'poppy' songs, or your own 'rock' songs?
Laura
Melanie: I just love singing full stop.
What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
Zach
Melanie: I would like to think the Spice Girls will still be successful as
well as us having successful solo careers.
What's it like to know many fans around the world love you?
Dave
Melanie: It's very flattering.
Do you think your remarks about Geri have helped her to get more famous?
Toby
Melanie: I think she was famous already, don't you?
My best mate is gay and she is totally obsessed with you, do u mind having
so many female fans, who like u in that way?
Kim
Melanie: I don't mind - anyone can fancy me - it's extreMelaniey
flattering, especially as women have better taste than men!!
Who do you fancy?
Ben
Melanie: Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray is rather tasty!
Aren't you worried about the reaction from your fans since you changed
from pop to rock?
Meatloaf
Melanie: I haven't really changed - I'm still a pop tart!
I've heard a rumour that you're playing in Australia, is that true?
Mel
Melanie: Yes. I'm going to be playing at the Metro in Sydney on 10th
October. Unfortunately, there's no time to play any other cities down
under on this tour, but maybe next year I can try and stay in Australia a
bit longer.
Would you ever play for Liverpool's women's team?
Darren
Melanie: I'd love to if I was good enough!
Now that Macca is off to Real Madrid, who's your favourite Liverpool
player?
Macca
Melanie: I think Michael Owen is great but I'd have to say Robbie Fowler
cos he's my mate.
How different is it carrying out the show all by yourself without the rest
of the gang?
Juliet
Melanie: It's a completely different vibe but I love a challenge.
Will you be coming to Latin America?
Marilia
Melanie: Yes, next year I hope to be doing a much more extensive tour.
How did your family and the other girls react to your new haircut?
Fee
Melanie: I think Melanie and Victoria prefer it dark but generally people
love it a much as do.
Do you prefer smaller venues or large arenas for performing on your own?
James
Melanie: It's fantastic to be able to play in front of any crowd, however
large or small.
If you could change one thing that has happened to the Spice Girls, what
would it be?
Gezza
Melanie: Everything that's happened to the Spice Girls has brought us to
where we are now, so I wouldn't want to change a thing.
Have you had any freaky experiences with fans?
Melanieissa
Melanie: I still find it really weird when fans cry when they meet me - I
feel like I've done something wrong!
What is the thing that now makes you happiest?
Angie Hung
Melanie: When Liverpool win, because it's becoming less frequent! Only
joking, I'm happy with everything at the moment.
