SPICE GIRLS BIOGRAPHY The Spice Girls started with an ad, a banner of sorts. The banner called for girls that were "outgoing". Melanie C auditioned for the band, and got a call back. Melanie almost missed out on the call back when she got a very bad throat infection. Joan O'Neil, Melanie's mother, called Chris Herbert and son up. She asked them to give Melanie C a second chance. Melanie C made the group anyway. Touch were signed on in 1994 with the Herbert's, they are the same men behind the group 5ive. Geri Halliwell decided to walk out on Herbert after she saw the group going no where. Halliwell believed in the talent each girl had, and didn't think the bands future layed behind four back-up singers and one lead singer. Melanie C played the lead. Touch shopped around for new management, while still signed on with Herbert. When Geri got the girls an interview with Simon they all hurried over. With an impromptu number, the girls caught Simon's eye and convinced him to sign them on. In 1995 Touch was signed up with Simon Fuller, they had a contract with Virgin Records and had changed their name to the Spice Girls. In 1996 the Spice Girls released their first single, "Wannabe" on July 1st. They caused a large commotion. They dropped their debut album, "Spice" in 1996. They sold millions worldwide. In 1998 the Spice Girls lost a singer, Geri Halliwell walked out on the group midway through their world tour. In 1998 the Spice Girls finished their tour without Geri Halliwell and released a single in Nov 1998 as a quartet. "Goodbye" topped the charts and became their 8th number 1, and their third subsequent Christmas number 1 single. In 2000 the Spice Girls launched their first full album as a quartet. In the midst of all the solo projects the album was overshadowed. The album became a fan favorite as a mixed a more mature sound with the delightful pop of the group. The Spice Girls also released a double-A side single and got their 9th number one single. The Spice Girls are taking a break to fulfill all their solo projects. The band has not disbanded. The four remaining Spice Girls are dear friends. Their busy schedule makes it hard for the girls to see each other, while one rests the other is busy promoting her own work. One thing is for sure, the Spice Girls have a lot of talent and their are eager to show it. Melanie B, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham have terminated their solo contracts with Virgin Records. Each girl is busy with solo projects and are shoping new record labels that will market them in their desired music genre. Melanie C is the only Spice Girl who continues to work with Virgin Records both as a solo artist and as a Spice Girl. (Geri Halliwell was signed on with EMI in 99 and has released two solo albums to date). If the Spice Girls could shed the pre-conceptions associated with teen-idols, they could acheive great success as solo artists. But, at the rise of their careers, the girls have had to deal with critiques about their pop roots and their solo intentions. The Spice Girls have no current plan to work together or release new material, but they do not disregard hopes to work together in the future...whenever they all find time to sit down and write and record.
